The Catron Food Pantries distributes food to residents of Catron County on the first Friday of each month at the Datil Community Center. Sign-in is from 9:30 to 10:30 am and food distribution starts soon after.

East and West of Datil

Located 21 miles west of Datil on Hwy 60, Pie Town, New Mexico hosts the Annual Pie Town Festival on the Second Saturday of September. This popular event includes a pie-baking contest, games and races, music, food, arts and crafts, and PIE, of course.

Pie Town is home for the landmark Pie-O-Neer. Make plans to feast on the "best pies in the universe" at the top of the Continental Divide.

The Very Large Array, located 14 miles east of Datil on Hwy 60, is one of the world's premier astronomical radio observatories. The VLA consists of 27 radio antennas in a Y-shaped configuration.

Open daily from 8:30am until sunset for self-guided tours. The VLA gift shop is open from 9:00am until 4:00 pm daily.

On the first Saturday of each month enjoy "First Saturday Guided Tours" at 11:00, 1:00, and 3:00. Visit the website for more information about the tours.

It is almost a requirement for any Datil resident to read the memoir of Agnes Morley Cleaveland, "No Life for a Lady". Written about her life on a cattle ranch this popular book describes life in the Datil area during the late 1800's.

Datil is the Spanish word for dates. The town is named after the seedpods of the yucca plant which resemble dates.

Local Organizations

Datil Extension Club

A women's group that meets once a month for lunch and crafts. The meetings are held at the Eagle Guest Cafe the third Wednesday of each month. The club sponsors a Craft Fair once a year. New members are welcome.

Sacaton Cowbelles

A group of gals from various walks of life, including ranching, who help support local activities that pertain to our ranching and farming way of life and offer information on issues that affect our agricultural industry. We welcome new members.

DACAB's mission is to bring health and wellness care to Datil and the surrounding communities in Pie Town, Horse Mountain, and western Socorro County. The vision is for a healthier, better educated, and integrated community resulting from local access to comprehensive health and wellness care.

The Datil Community Presbyterian Church, located between the Datil Elementary School and the school gym, has regular church services each Sunday at 10 AM. All are welcome.

Horse Springs Bible Church located at Mile 40, S.R. 12 has Worship Services at 11:15 AM each Sunday with Sunday School beginning at 10 AM. A potluck lunch follows the service. Bible Studies are at homes during the week. Everyone is welcome. For more information call: Pastor Lee Robertson 772-5697.
